Confessional Poetry

is the poetry of "I". Deeply personal and in this case the poet is the speaker which the reader never wants to assume otherwise.  Although sometimes shocking, poets like Anne Sexton and Sylvia Plath spent much time honing the prosody (rhythm and sound) which draws the reader in to relate on a personal level themselves, realizing that they too may have something to confess.  Look for it here:

"The Black Art" by Anne Sexton

An End Begins by S.M.(M).L.

Summer sunsets draw nearer
the close of day. It begins in a rush,
each moment longer, more languid
than the next. Heat and humidity settle
in, and we wish for respite.

The first leaf always falls, though,
and it's over in a blink. The summer
you learned to ride a bike, the summer
you jumped off the dock, the summer
you were all mine becomes the autumn
you go off to school.

You'll grow and grow; I'll watch with pride
you become what you will, brave, bold,
beautiful, made of sugar and spice, snakes
and snails and I of fleeting hugs, wishes,
and butterfly kisses.

There's a poet in my soul; she's always been there, but is often neglected.  I'm letting her out here.  I hope you will too.  Here's some unsolicited advice:  When your poet speaks to you, just let it out, there's something there, I promise you.  Here you'll find ideas about how to hone your craft as I practice mine and lead you to some of my favorite published poems and poets.
