My Antonia by Willa Cather

 How I Found:  This book has been with me for over twenty years.  It's one that I reread periodically, and yet every time, I love it for different reasons, but one love never changes.  I love this book for its namesake. In fact, I tried to name our daughter after the main character.  It is clear why the narrator loves her and calls her "My" Antonia.  On this reading, what struck me was the stories folded within the novel:  the brothers and their story of the wolves and the threshing machine incident.  Not only is this a beautiful tale, it can also be a shocking one. It reminded me that, "Whatever we had missed, we possessed together the precious, the incommunicable past, like only a lifelong friend, or book, can.  
Why You Might Read:  If you appreciate a piece of literature, like you appreciate a piece of art, this read takes many glances to fully absorb.  You'll be taken with the first read, but you'll come back because, like Jim, who will never forget Antonia, you will never forget this book.  Then, when you look again, it will reveal something new to you like an old friend you've known since childhood.
